Dr James made his own ink with which he wrote his
journal and reports as follows:
"The bark of the honeysuckle contains very
little tan, tested this 24th August 1826, this ink is prepared from the
decoction of the bark in which is dissolved a quantity of extract from
Wattle bark."
"The same ink August 24 1826 - A mixture
of wattle ink and the ink as above 25th August 1826."
"Stem and leaves of the bitter shrub
contained no tan."
"Dec 20 1827. This ink is prepared from
the essence of the Wattle simple boiled and allowed to stand on the pot for
some days."
The last entry is 12/11/1828.
